101 of Tragus Piercing – Pain, Healing Time, Aftercare & Images

The Tragus piercing has been a popular ear-piercing choice for many years, but most recently enjoyed a popularity boost in 2005. The curated ear trend with its delicate, decorative piercings accelerated its popularity further and with celebrities such as Rihanna, Scarlet Johansson and Zoe Kravitz rocking the cool-girl ear-piercing trend, the tragus keeps attracting more admiration.

If you’re thinking of adding a tragus piercing to your look but you don’t have all the deets to make an informed decision – then this is the article for you! Keep scrolling to find out exactly what a tragus piercing is, how much this type of piercing hurts, as well as essential aftercare advice and our pick of the coolest tragus piercing jewellery. Let’s get into it!

What is a tragus piercing?

You know that little flap of cartilage you press over your ear canal when you don’t want to hear something? Well, that’s the tragus. Its job is to capture sound from behind you. Your piercing will target the centre of that tiny triangular flap of cartilage.

But it doesn’t just stop there! There are now alternatives to the traditional tragus piercing that are gaining in popularity:

Double Tragus piercing

A popular tragus piercing trend is the double piercing where two stacked piercings are made through one tragus.

Vertical tragus

The vertical tragus piercing is a puncture made vertically right from the edge. It is more painful than usual piercings because it runs through the small fold of cartilage and comes out on the same side. This is one of the newest types of tragus piercings and is gaining in popularity.

Surface tragus

A surface tragus piercing only differs from a vertical tragus piercing because it does not completely go through the cartilage. It is hard to tell the difference by just looking! A surface piercing traverses through the cartilage without reaching the other side.

The placement for an anti-tragus piercing is located in the tiny triangular shaped spot above the ear lobe and beside the tragus – the area where the cord of your headphones rest.

How long does a tragus piercing take to heal?

The tragus is a cartilage piercing and can take up to a year to heal. However, some people may experience a quicker healing time of 3-6 months. During the healing time, you must leave the piercing alone except for when cleaning which you should do twice a day for the entire healing process.

How much does a tragus piercing cost?

It all depends on where you go and what jewellery you choose. In London, prices for a tragus piercing start at around £30 + £40 for the jewellery. If you go to somewhere like Maria Tash at Liberty of London, you’ll be charged the standard £30 for the piercing but you’ll have to fork out hundreds to thousands of pounds for her fine jewellery to have it pierced with.

How much does a tragus piercing hurt?

Pain is personal. What your best friend found to be a relatively painless piercing might be extremely painful for you – we all have different pain thresholds and areas of sensitivity. Cartilage piercings go through much tougher skin compared to the softer ear lobes and require more pressure to pierce through.

In terms of pain experienced, the tragus piercing is described more as deep pressure than pain. And remember, it’s all over in seconds! It’s essential to do your research and choose a competent piercing professional who has performed hundreds of piercings, especially in this area. Experience is everything.

What are the risks involved with a tragus piercing?

The biggest risk with any piercing is the possibility of infection.  The risk of infection is higher with cartilage piercings, particularly tragus piercings because the piercing site is so small and exposed.

It’s quite easy to identify an infected ear piercing. Symptoms may include:

  • Yellow, pus-like discharge
  • Pain and swelling that lasts more than two weeks
  • Inflammation, redness and pain around the piercing
  • Itching and burning

If you experience any of the above symptoms, get the advice of a GP or specialist straight away.  To avoid infection be sure to strictly follow aftercare instructions.

How do you clean a tragus piercing?

Throughout the entire healing process, you need to clean your piercing twice a day using a saline solution or unscented soap. Check out this aftercare guide by the Association of Professional Piercers that gives cleaning instructions for body piercings. Contact your body piercing professional if you feel you need further aftercare advise.

When can you first change a tragus piercing?

As soon as your piercing is healed, you’ll finally be able to change the jewellery for the first time. Cartilage piercings heal slowly internally and the healing time can be up to a year. If you change the jewellery before your healing then you run the risk of infection, your body rejecting the piercing and inadequate healing.

Unless there is an issue, don’t change your piercing until your piercing is completely healed. If you’re not sure if your piercing has healed consult with your piercing professional. You should return to your piercing professional to remove your piercing and change the jewellery for the first time – they will also be able to give you tips on how to remove and change the piercing yourself. Always consult a professional if you’re unsure about anything regarding your piercing.

Tragus Piercing Myths

Myth #1 – If you get a tragus piercing you will lose weight

Whilst there are some experts claiming that a tragus piercing helps with weight loss, there is no solid evidence to back up these claims. If you’re looking for a quick fix weight loss trick, piercings are not it – they should be chosen just for fashion and personal preference.

It is suggested that you can achieve weight loss from the effects of the piercing suppressing the appetite. As well as this they say that it helps maintain endorphin levels that result in a reduction of stress and anxiety that, in turn, may lead to overeating. The theory is based on the principles of alternative therapies such as acupuncture.

In our recent post about daith piercings for migraines, we discuss the importance of acupuncture and reflexology points on your ears (see image below) which affect the corresponding areas of the body when stimulated by the insertion of a tiny needle with acupuncture or with specialist techniques using finger and thumb pressures as with reflexology.

This is not the best map for beginners, but an advanced one. Auricular reflexology is by far my favorite one: fast, painless, clean, hygienic, and the easiest one for a do-it-yourself as you can leave the seeds/magnet balls/pins on the points for further pressuring yourself. Massaging your ears every morning or while you are in the traffic jam, outer and inner part of them, stimulated the whole body and organs. ? The acupuncture point on the middle of your tragus is said to be responsible for appetite control which when pierced is thought to help curb your appetite.

Let us be clear – getting a piercing has zero effect on your metabolism! Therefore, it won’t help you lose any pounds without eating well and exercising. Frustratingly, you can’t just pierce the pounds away!

Myth #2 – The tragus doesn’t have any nerve endings so it’s a painless piercing

There are fewer nerve endings in the tragus, but you will definitely feel something – your pain receptors are not going to miss a hollow-needle piercing through cartilage! Exactly how painful it is will differ from person to person.
