Hair Myth #1: Cutting your Hair makes it Grow Faster

Contrary to popular belief, cutting your hair doesn’t affect the speed of its growth in any way. While this does make unhealthy ends disappear, it doesn’t encourage hair to grow any faster.

Your hair grows from the roots and not the ends, therefore focusing on scalp health is important if you want your hair to grow faster. However, regular hair trims prevent split ends, which can make your hair appear thicker and healthier. Therefore, maintain your length by minimizing breakage and trimming unhealthy, split ends.

Hair Myth #2: Brushing Your Hair Makes it Grow Faster

Brushing your hair does stimulate blood flow to the scalp and distributes natural oils to the rest of your hair, but it is unlikely that it will make it grow any faster

Hair strands can be easily damaged in the process and excessive brushing can create friction, which causes frizz and cuticle damage. For this reason, you should only brush your hair as needed to style and/or detangle your hair. Make sure to be gentle, without pulling and start from the roots and slowly work your way down.

Hair Myth #3: Stress Makes Your Hair Grey

While stress is not the cause of greying hair, increased stress can speed up the process.

Both genetics and ageing determine the likelihood of individuals developing grey hair. Your hair follicles produce melanin, the pigment cells that give your hair its natural colour. Greying occurs when the body starts to produce less melanin. So, your genetics are responsible for your greying hair, not stress. However, do remember that stress can impact the hair as it can trigger temporary hair loss.

Hair Myth #5: You Can Cure Split Ends with Products

You cannot ‘fix’ or ‘cure’ split ends with products. No product has the power to mend split ends, however, it can make it look less noticeable and improve the appearance of it temporarily.

Leaving split ends untreated can cause it to travel up the hair and cause more split ends and breakage. Once the damage is done, it is permanent so the only remedy is to cut it off. Hair Myth #6: Hair Gets Immune to the Same Shampoo

You may hear that your hair can get immune to a particular shampoo, if you don’t switch it up often, and stop working. It should be noted that your hair doesn’t become immune to products, instead it’s your hair condition that changes.

The results of these products may differ when the state of your hair changes. Many factors can affect this including seasons or even your state of health.

Hair Myth #7: Air Drying is better for Your Hair

You should spare your hair from the heat of hot styling tools, however blow-drying isn’t worse for your hair than letting it air-dry naturally.

While blow-drying can cause damage to the surface of the hair, air-drying can affect deeper strands. This can occur as natural hair that holds water for long amounts of time can weaken the protein and make it fragile.

Your best bet is to air-dry your hair until it is mostly dry. Then finish off the drying process by using a hairdryer on a low setting and, importantly, being sure to use a heat protectant spray.

Hair Myth #8: You Can’t Dye Hair While Pregnant

Feel free to go as bright and bold with your hair as you wish during your pregnancy months. Hair dye doesn’t actually affect your baby as only a very tiny amount of the product gets absorbed into the skin. One of our hair myths busted!

The dyes don’t contain any toxin or chemicals that can harm the foetus that’s growing inside you. In addition to this, the dye doesn’t stay in contact with your skin long enough to absorb into your bloodstream. Hair Myth #9: Cold Water Makes Hair Shiny

It is a common belief that cold water on your hair at the end of a shower can control shine. It may feel refreshing, but it’s not doing anything for your hair. Your hair doesn’t react to the temperature of the water as it contains no living cells.

What it does do is close the cuticles in your hair. This then makes it lie flat, which reflects light and makes it appear slightly more shiny than usual. However, if you really want glossy hair, invest in a good hair oil that can do the job.

Hair Myth #10: Conditioner Makes Your Hair Greasy

There are many hair myths, and this tends to be on almost all lists! Your conditioner does not make your hair greasy. In fact, your hair can benefit from the nourishing and protective effects of conditioning treatments.

Conditioner is an essential part of a healthy hair care regime, and greasy hair is actually caused naturally when your body produces too much sebum at the scalp. So, when washing your hair, ensure that you use your conditioner on the mid-lengths and ends of your hair. Avoid applying it to the scalp if it tends to get greasy quickly.

Hair Myth #11: Wearing Hats Can Cause Hair Loss

There are many myths relating to hats and hair loss. The idea that wearing a hat can cut off circulation to the scalp is simply an old wives tale. Many people believe that hats can strain hair follicles and cause the hair to eventually fall out. However, hair loss is actually caused by a combination of genetic and hormonal factors. It has nothing to do with whether or not you wear a hat.

Apart from the above, overall, wearing a hat often isn’t good for the health and appearance of your hair. Wearing them on warm days can cause sweat to build up and irritate the scalp. Hair Myth #12: If you Shampoo Less Often, Your Scalp Will Gradually Produce Less Oil

No matter how frequently you shampoo, your scalp produces the same amount of oil. Cutting back on shampoo has no effect on your sebaceous glands that produce the sebum that makes hair greasy. This is actually determined by genetics and hormones.

The dirt and build-up of oil that accumulates on the scalp can cause irritation and eventually stunt hair growth. Instead, you should wash your hair when it starts to get greasy. Wash it with a moisturizing shampoo and apply conditioner on the mid-lengths and ends of the hair when you need it. Try and do this at least once a week for good hygiene.

Hair Myth #13: Brush Your Hair 100 Strokes a Day to Make It Shiny

While brushing your hair is essential, there is such thing as ‘too much of a good thing’ when it comes to your hair excessive brushing can actually cause damage to the hair than good.

Brushing it distributes the natural hair from the roots of the scalp down to other parts of the hair. More so, overdoing it can actually do the opposite and strip the hair of its natural oils. Therefore, only brush your hair to detangle it and when styling it. Ensure that you use a brush with soft bristles and brush it gently, working your way from the roots all the way down.
