11 Sleeping Habits That Can Reduce Breakouts While You Sleep

They do not call it beauty sleep for anything: sleeping is the time when your body works hard to heal and recharge itself. However, there are several sleeping factors that can also directly affect the skin.

For a lot of us, a good skincare routine means focusing on cleansing and moisturizing the skin. However, your sleeping habits are also equally as important. Therefore, lack of sleep or unhygienic sleeping habits can have the opposite effect on your skin. More so, your biggest beauty slip-ups may be happening during your snooze time!

By ensuring that you practice good hygiene, even when you sleep, and making sure you get enough of it, you can prevent many skincare issues. So, it’s time to adopt these new night-time habits so that you can stop waking up to breakouts.

No matter how tired and exhausted you may be, take a few minutes before bed to follow these essential steps to really improve your complexion.

Ensure You Get Enough Sleep

Lack of sleep comes with a number of consequences in addition to feeling tired. Your body needs sleep to repair itself to rebuild tissues and increase cell production. This also includes producing collagen and improving blood circulation.

Collagen is essential to keep the skin plump and also to keep the elasticity of the skin, to reduce wrinkles and fine lines. Furthermore, any decrease in blood flow can make the skin look dull and drab. In addition to this, with lack of sleep, the skin and even become dry and lead to blemishes and breakouts.

So, aim to get around seven to nine hours of sleep each night to ensure your body gets enough time to repair itself.

Develop a Sleeping Routine

Our body’s clock is in tune with nature and naturally slows down when it’s night time. So, it’s best to try and establish a sleeping routine. More so you should attempt to go to bed around the same time every night. When you are consistent with a sleep schedule, it helps promote a better night’s rest.

We’re all guilty of staying super late every now and then. But, since your body needs a full night’s rest to properly do its job, one late night can have negative effects. If you don’t have consistency with your nightly sleep, your circadian rhythm can be disrupted and become out of sync. In fact, this can speed up the signs of ageing on your face.

So, try and get to bed before 11 pm each night to get enough sleep and prevent any skincare problems developing. It’s ok to skip your beauty sleep routine once in a while, but try and not make it a habit.

Switch Your Sleeping Position

While it can be cosy and snug to sleep with your face planted into your pillow, it can also come with consequences. It can be tough to change your sleeping position, but it may work wonders on your skin.

Sadly certain positions, like sleeping on your side or tummy, could be the culprit for your acne. This tends to be because when you are sleeping in these positions, your face is directly placed on the pillow. Therefore, the dirt and oil from said pillow will get transferred onto your skin and cause blemishes. In addition to this, it can also cause deeper wrinkles and creases on the skin.

The repeated pressures and creasing on the skin from sleeping this way can eventually even lead to permanent lines. Therefore, the best way to sleep is on your back. Doing so will keep any dirt and oil off your face, as well as preventing any friction from the pillow to the skin. Though it may not be the most comfortable position, try it out and see if it makes any difference to your acne.

Not Changing Your Pillowcase Often Enough

Your pillowcase can become a breeding place for bacteria. When you sleep every night, the oil and dirt you accumulated on your face transfer to your sheets and pillowcases. The residue that builds up can result in breakouts and irritations when it gets transferred to your skin. So, aim to change your sheets at least once a week to avoid the transmission of these impurities! However, if you don’t have time to change the sheets, just change your pillowcases – as this is where your face will be when you sleep. 

Tip: Try and switch to a satin or silk pillowcase as this doesn’t absorb as much moisture as cotton fabric. This will also reduce chafing to the skin as it is a much more gentle and soft material.

Don’t Forget to Take Your Makeup Off

After a long day, you may just want to forget about taking any stubborn makeup off and just roll into bed. But, just five minutes in the bathroom to clean your skin could tremendously help your skin and even prevent damaged skin in the future.

Sleeping with makeup on is the sure way to invite bacteria to your skin to cause a breakout. Where your body temperature slightly increases as you sleep it can result in the absorption of whatever is on the surface of this skin. This includes makeup, which can result in clogged pores.

Importantly, if you want to wake up with a fresh face in the morning, removing your makeup is a must. So, no matter how tired you may be, just take off your makeup with a gentle cleanser and apply a hydrating moisturizer after.

Don’t Sleep with Open Hair

When you sleep with your hair left open, your strands are likely to come in contact with your face. The natural oils or any products that you have used in your hair can cause irritation to the skin and clog pores to cause breakouts. You can easily avoid this by using a hair tie to keep your locks away from your face. However, sleeping with your hair in a ponytail isn’t the most comfortable option either. So, instead, just gather all your hair up and tie it in a loose bun on top of your head.

Keep Your Room Cool

Your sleep atmosphere can also make a big difference in your sleep quality. Not only does too much heat make it harder for you to fall asleep, but it can also cause bacteria to thrive. Furthermore, cranking up the heat can make you sweat and cause bacteria to sit on your face. 

So, make sure you keep the temperature in your room nice and cool so you can snuggle up cosily under your soft duvet.

Use a Humidifier

While you shouldn’t have your room too warm when you sleep, a room that is too cool can also dry out the skin. Combat this by working on your skin’s hydration through the night by turning on an air humidifier. This can put the moisture back into the air and humidity to keep your skin moisturized. Run it through the night while you sleep to help keep dryness at bay.

Don’t Let Your Pet Sleep beside You

There’s no better feeling than having your furry friend sleep beside you. So, whilst we completely understand that what we are about to say may bring on sadness and anger we also know it to be the truth. Letting your pet sleep in beside you isn’t the best idea for your skin.

It’s important to try to avoid sleeping with your face resting on your pet. As cosy as it may be, your pet may need to swap sleeping spots to the foot of the bed instead. The fur of your furry friend could contain bacteria, which will transfer onto your face and cause breakouts. So, to avoid this, try not to sleep right next to them where the pet’s fur can come into contact with the face whilst you sleep.

Don’t Use your Phone Right before Sleeping

Your phone is probably the first thing you look at in the morning, and the last thing at night. But, if you have a common habit of scrolling through social media in bed before you sleep, it’s time to break that habit.

The light emitted by the phone isn’t doing any favours to your skin. Holding your phone so close to your face in the dark can cause you to squint your eyes to the screen. Furthermore, this can cause premature wrinkles around the eye area.

The blue light given off by the phone can also prevent the release of a hormone called melatonin which, in turn, can make it take longer for you to fall asleep.

So, for a better night’s sleep and to prevent premature fine lines, put away the phone before you get to bed.

Don’t Leave the Lights On

Screens aren’t the only culprit either, light can also cause a serious disturbance to your melatonin levels too. Therefore, it can make it hard for you to fall asleep and stay asleep.

This can make you look tired and puffy in the morning, which isn’t good for your complexion. The absence of light sends a signal to your body that it’s time for rest. So, turn that light off and get an undisturbed night of sleep!
