Ingestible adaptogens have been making waves in wellness for many years. Not only this, but they have become a daily habit for health enthusiasts. Now, it’s time for the use of these ancient substances to move from your kitchen to your bathroom. Let’s revitalise your skincare routine!

How do adaptogens work?

Adaptogens work by “hacking” the stress response in the body. This gives us more resilience to handle and recover from various stressors. These can include environmental, emotional, mental and physical stressors.

In response to stress, there are 3 stages our bodies go through. It’s referred to as general adaptation syndrome (GAS):

  1. Alarm phase
  2. Phase of resistance
  3. Phase of exhaustion

When we encounter a stressor, the body produces hormones. These hormones, such as adrenaline and cortisol attempt to resist the stressor. As we fatigue, we enter the exhaustion phase.

Adaptogens lengthen the resistance phase. This allows us to resist the effects of the stressor and hold off exhaustion. Although adrenaline and cortisol have many benefits, too much may damage our health. Reducing stress with adaptogens helps to reduce the production of stress hormones. Of which, at such a volume, could be quite dangerous.

Adaptogens boost the adaptive store in all of our biological systems. Additionally, they help to guide the body to find its own natural homeostasis. These mood-boosting herbal supplements are non-stimulating, non-addictive as well as do no harm.

The physical responses to stress can cause a whole host of unpleasant symptoms. Furthermore, if the stressors continue it can lead to chronic illness.

Research on adaptogens has found they have several positive effects on the body:

  • prevent stress
  • anti-fatigue
  • anti-depressive
  • calm the central nervous system
  • increase mental work capacity
  • enhance attention
  • prevent weight gain

What makes adaptogens so good in skincare?

As well as fighting stress, adaptogens fight the signs of ageing skin. This occurs through their anti-inflammatory, antioxidant as well as skin rejuvenating effects. Being able to combat stress, as well as being packed full of skin supportive vitamins and minerals – they are a perfect fit for use in beauty. Adding adaptogens to your beauty kit is a natural way to defend your skin. Protect it from the signs of ageing as well as seriously upping your skincare game!
